Filling an enormous caldera and surrounded by volcanoes and traditional Mayan villages, Lake Atitlan has become renowned for it's indescribable beauty and unique culture and history. After spending the day on a guided boat tour of the Lake and it’s surrounding towns, go out and experience the nightlife of Panajachel or rest up for your day at the market. Not far from Panajachel lies the town of Chichicastenango, known for its market that attracts locals and foreigners from across Guatemala. Here you will find unique handicrafts created by the native Mayan people, visit the local cathedral and explore the indoor produce market. Day 1: Drive to Panajachel; Guided Boat Tour of Lake Atitlan
Day 2: Drive to Chichicastenango; Tour of Chichicastenango & Market Day; Return to Antigua
Day 1: Antigua to Panajachel
Lake Atitlan is one of the most beautiful sites in Guatemala and a must-see while you are here. This a tour will take you to Panajachel along with two of the most intriguing villages around the lake; Santiago de Atitlan and San Juan La Laguna. After check-in at our hotel, we will board our private boat with your private guide and cruise to Santiago de Atitlan. Here you will have the opportunity see the infamous statue of Saint Maximon and how the local villagers house, worship, praise, and give sacrifice to their patron saint. We will then head to San Juan La Laguna, a small village where we will see the local cathedral and visit a local business where you will learn the traditional ways Mayan women still create handmade textiles. From here, we will return to Panajachel for a late lunch and an afternoon of shopping and exploring the town. The rest of the evening will be free for you to uncover the culture of Panajachel before unwinding at the hotel.
Day 2: Panajachel to Chichicastenango and Antigua
Breakfast will be at your hotel at 7:00am so we can leave by 8:00am to begin our hour and forty-five minute journey to Chichicastenango Market. The Chichicastenango Market is only open on Thursdays and Sundays and is the largest and best in Guatemala- famous for its jade jewelry, handmade wooden crafts and traditional textiles. If you brush up on your bargaining skills you are sure to find the most unique and high quality goods at the most affordable prices. If you lack bargaining skills don’t worry, your Guinness Travel Guide will do the bargaining for you! After a morning of shopping we will go to one of the best restaurants in town, allowing you the opportunity to taste the local and traditional flavors of the Quiche region. From lunch we will return to Antigua and drop you off at your hotel around 5:30pm, allowing you plenty of time for dinner in Antigua and a night out on the town.
